 I love the Melbourne Cup!
I love the Melbourne Cup, and not because I enjoy getting frocked up and glugging Champers in the Birdcage. No, it’s because Cup Day is when we are allowed to stop worrying about frost. Between budburst and the first Tuesday in November everyone in the wine industry is anxiously watching the weather reports. The little tiny buds, then tender shoots with their cute little proto-bunches are all completely at the mercy of a single cold night. You can go home one day with the vineyard all pert and green, but come in the next to a scene of desolation. All the shoots have been frozen and within hours turn black and start to shrivel. Sometimes a second budburst will take place, and sometimes, like 2007 another frost comes in and breaks your heart again. But this year, despite a couple of close calls, we all escaped pretty much unharmed. There are several furlongs to go before harvest, but one of the big hurdles has been cleared and we’re all galloping along nicely. I love the Melbourne Cup!
